Jasper M. Trautsch (ed.), Civic Nationalisms in Global Perspective (London/New York: Routledge)
Squaring the South Slavic Circle: Ethnicity, Nationhood and Citizenship in Yugoslavia2019 •
The chapter examines two different sources of understanding what Yugoslavism meant to various actors – a political notion (with a focus on various concepts of citizenship in the interwar Kingdom of Yugoslavia and the post-war Yugoslav Socialist Federation]) and a cultural conception (which in the 19th and the first half of the 20th century usually included an ethnic component and, in late socialism, a more civic-minded cross-cultural identity). If civic nationalism means that a nation is based on shared state citizenship (and not some kind of ethno-cultural membership), the chapter argues that the only conception of Yugoslav identity that came close to this definition existed in the second, socialist and federal Yugoslavia (1945-1991) in the form of what we call civic pluri-nationalism.

Character Education Management through Islamic Religious Education Activities in Higher Education2024 •
It is very important for students in tertiary institutions to understand character education, especially through Islamic Religious Education activities in tertiary institutions. Character education management starts from planning, organizing, implementing, controlling results and supporting factors and hindering character education through Islamic Religious Education activities for students in tertiary institutions. The aim of this research is to determine the management of character education through Islamic religious education activities in higher education. This research method uses a descriptive qualitative method using data collection techniques using observation, interviews and documentation studies. Data analysis in this research was carried out by reducing, presenting data and verifying data in drawing conclusions. The results of this research use planning, organizing, actuating, controlling to achieve predetermined institutional goals. Good management is needed in character education activities on the PGRI University West Sumatra campus, namely by planning, organizing, implementing and controlling character education to realize the goals of character education in religious activities. Character education planning includes values that are instilled, namely independence, sincerity, honesty, responsibility and politeness. Organizing character education is carried out with a clear organizational structure in accordance with its duties and main tasks. Implementation of character education is carried out through congregational prayers, the practice of congregational midday prayers, midday prayers, recitation guidance. Controlling character education is carried out by monitoring every religious activity and always conducting evaluations once a week. The success of character education can be seen from the criteria for success, effective and efficient management of character education. Supporting factors for character education are human resources, facilities and infrastructure, quality standards and society's perspective on higher education.

Prospective, multicenter international cohort. To evaluate the outcome of surgical decompression for CSM at a global level. Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is a degenerative spine disease and the most common cause of spinal cord dysfunction worldwide. Surgery is increasingly recommended as the preferred treatment strategy for CSM to improve neurological and functional status and quality of life. The outcomes of surgical intervention for CSM have never been evaluated at an international level. Between October 2007 and January 2011, 479 symptomatic patients with image-evidence of CSM were enrolled in the prospective, multicenter AOSpine CSM-International study from sixteen global sites. Preoperative and postoperative clinical status, functional impairment and quality of life were evaluated using the modified Japanese Orthopaedic Assessment Scale (mJOA), Nurick Scale, Neck Disability Index (NDI) and Short-Form-36v2. Preoperative and 12- and 24-months postoperative outcomes were c...

Lignocellulosic biomass pyrolysis could be an economically feasible option for forest management as it reduces the need to burn litter and helps in fire prevention thus avoiding the release of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. This study characterises wood vinegar (WV) obtained via a continuous fast pyrolysis process in terms of its composition, ageing and herbicidal properties. The aqueous WV fraction had a moisture content of 84% in weight and contained more than 200 compounds. Acetic acid, hydroxyacetaldehyde and hydroxyacetone were the major components. No significant differences were found in WV composition according to the starting material (poplar, pine, pruning litter, forest waste). No residual aromatic polycyclic compounds that could be harmful to the environment were detected. In a series of climate-controlled glass chamber experiments, the WV proved to be as effective an inhibitor of seed germination and seedling growth as a contact herbicide...
The Fragile Triangle of Artistic Freedom
The Fragile Triangle of Artistic Freedom2024 •
This study addresses the lack of knowledge, data and awareness of the challenges of artistic freedom worldwide and explores the current status of systems which monitor and document violations of artistic freedom. By interviewing key actors in the landscape of artistic freedom and analysing available reports, this study portrays how donors, international organisations and civil society organisations (CSOs) understand the current challenges they face. It identifies gaps in the promotion and protection of artistic freedom, including what is needed to address them, and points to a number of positive developments as well as negative trends. The study explores the dependency of CSOs on funding and how donors, policymakers and UN bodies are, in turn, dependent on and benefit from information provided by CSOs as well as the fragility of this interdependency
Policy Implications of Research in Education
Understanding Education Reform Policy Trajectories by Analytical SequencingThis chapter exemplifies a strategy for understanding and examining Policy and PracticeNexuses concerning education reform trajectories. Education policy-making is an increasingly complex process, mostly neither linear and rational nor unidirectional. However, to understand such processes, we advocate complexity reduction through analytical distinctions, sequencing, and entity-relationship-thinking. While policy-practice nexuses are conflated in the reality of public education, our analytical approach must produce a somewhat linear, sequential understanding. Drawing on this argument, we propose a model which displays education reform trajectories and explore the model in terms of empirical objects. With the distinction between entities and relationships, we facilitate analytical definitions in Policy-Practice Research regarding what affects what and how it does so. Relationships are units of re-contextualization, process, and transfer, which demand the presence of at least two entit...
