Older Adult Fall Prevention: Perceptions, Beliefs, and BehaviorsFalls in adults aged 65 years and older are an important health issue associated with excess mortality, functional limitations, loss of independence, and reduced quality of life. Physicians can reduce the likelihood of falls in their older patients by incorporating prevention strategies into their clinical practice. Research has identified effective interventions, notably clinical assessment and risk factor reduction and exercise programs with balance training, that require older adults to adopt new behaviors. However, some older adults believe falls are an inevitable consequence of aging, while others do not see themselves as personally vulnerable. Factors that facilitate adopting fall interventions include social support, low-intensity exercise, and the perception that the programs are relevant. Barriers include fatalism, denial of risk, poor self-efficacy, and no previous history of exercise. To encourage their patients’ participation, physicians need to present fall intervention...

Soils provide many important services for ecosystems and humans, primarily through vegetative feedbacks. Many factors can alter soil properties which in turn alter the quality of services that soil provide for their ecosystem. This study compared a variety of physical and chemical properties between restored coniferous and prairie ecosystems. In addition, a comparison was made between plots of the same ecosystem type at different lengths of restoration. Soil properties tested included pH, percent organic matter, and nutrient concentrations, among other tests. Percent organic matter and nitrate and phosphate concentrations were found to be similar among the prairie and coniferous sites. In comparison, the percent moisture, pH, litter depth and ammonium concentration were different between the ecosystems. The only soil properties that varied based on length of restoration were the soil pH in the prairie plots and the percent organic matter in the coniferous plots. The qualitative tren...

Subsurface heterogeneity has a significant influence on infiltration and distribution of DNAPLs. Numerical models of multiphase flow are limited by their ability to predict behavior of DNAPLs in the field due to lack of accurate data on characterization of heterogeneity. However, these models help to obtain insights into the complex behavior that will be useful in designing effective remediation schemes. A number of multiphase flow codes that have the ability to capture the fundamental processes that control the migration of NAPLs exist. However, the issue of which constitutive model and parameters need to be used in simulating DNAPL behavior at various scales of interest is not studied satisfactorily. With the goal of contributing to the knowledge needed to address this issue, an experimental study was conducted to generate an accurate data set on the migration of DNAPLs in a synthetic aquifer with various combinations of heterogeneous/ homogenous configurations. This paper present...
