Eternity, Perpetuity, and Time in the Cosmologies of Plotinus and Mīr Dāmād2024 •
The present piece focuses on the influence of Plotinus' understanding of time and eternity as articulated in Plotinus' third and fifth Enneads upon Mīr Dāmād's (d. 1631–2) conception of eternity, perpetuity, and time found in his Book of Blazing Brands (Kitab al-Qabasāt). Although Mīr Dāmād's conception of eternity, perpetuity, and time resembles that of Plotinus' cosmology and ontology, he departs from Plotinus' hypostases in establishing strict parameters for each domain. Unlike Plotinus, Mīr Dāmād argues that the realm of eternity is reserved for God alone, while the realm of Perpetuity contains the Platonic Forms. For Mīr Dāmād, the realm of time is an effect of the realm of Perpetuity and a tool for human beings to understand how to measure events in the temporal world. Unlike many other Shī'ite philosophers, Mīr Dāmād's articulation of these three cosmological realms incorporates thought found in the works of both prominent Sunni and Shī'ite scholars such as Ibn Sīnā, Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghāzālī, Suhrawardī, and Naṣīr al- Dīn Ṭūsī. Although his most successful student, Mullā Ṣadrā Shirazī, had ultimately disagreed with his teach- er's cosmological doctrine, he remained influenced by the multitude of sources that his teacher had used.

Hardcover Ausgabe in Deluxe Format 17x24. Zahlreiche Abbildungen. https://www.amazon.de/dp/3754973487/

click on https://rdcu.be/b3v14 for a journal copy As Merleau-Ponty points out, our sense of time is that of passage. This demands that we think of time both as extended—that is, as including the past and the future—and as now, the latter being conceived as the point of expiration. The difficulty comes when try to think these separately. To consider time as extended is to think of it in terms of space—i.e., in terms of the “parts outside of parts” definitive of space. The simultaneous existence of such parts seems to exclude expiration. When, however, we consider time in terms of expiration, we face the problem of when the now expires. It cannot cease to exist in itself, since then it existed. It also cannot cease in another now, since then it did not exist. Such difficulties indicate that something is missing—something presupposed by both, which would allow us to think of expiration and temporal extension together. In this paper, I argue that what is missing is the body. Its self-presence is behind these two aspects of time.

SEMIOTIC AS COGNITIVE SCIENCE 11996 •
This is an early attempt to understand how much cognitive science and semiotics have—or should have—in common. I had heard remarks occasionally (starting in the 80's) about how cognitive science should take semiotics more seriously, and I had even heard Thomas Sebeok reprove cognitive scientists for staking a claim to part of the territory of semiotics and then having the effrontery to call it by a different name. My initial conception of cognitive science was tied closely to my conception of artificial intelligence in the late 70's, and that did not remind me much of semiotics. The main concern of AI, in those days, was the rough internal architecture of artificial intellects—that is, of computer programs theoretically capable of driving instantiating hardware to perform intelligent activity. But I came to regard Sebeok's view as more or less on track and I believe it has become quite clear, as we near the end of the second decade of the twenty-first century, that there is much overlap between the research fields of cognitive science and semiotics. This paper, written in 1992, was a preliminary exploration of this overlap.
Is it possible to think the end of thought? Can writing describe its own obliteration? Can they do so without idealising or otherwise falsifying that end by imagining a new form of thought that would survive the death of thought, or a mark left by the effacement of all traces? This is to wonder, once again, if one can think beyond the Hegelian Aufhebung or sublation, a task which, since Jacques Derrida's intervention, we have come to associate with the work of Georges Bataille. It is our hypothesis that Bataille's notion of a sovereign self-consciousness that is capable of thinking pure loss without sublation or remainder will allow us to make sense of the notion of extinction which has recently become one of philosophy's central concerns, as it attempts to think in a new way the problems of accessing the radical other of thought. We shall examine the concept of an absolute destruction of certain activities almost indissociable from humanity itself — writing, thinking — in Jacques Derrida's work on nuclear catastrophe, Jean-François Lyotard's notion of the death of the sun, the speculative realism of Ray Brassier and Quentin Meillassoux, and Mladen Dolar's notion of an apocalypse at the beginning of thought, as described in G. W. F. Hegel's Science of Logic, which may fruitfully be juxtaposed with Meillassoux's notion of an impossibility of thought at the beginning of the universe, in the age of the 'arche-fossil', in an attempt to present Bataille's project in The Accursed Share as a solution to the problem of thinking the end of thought. The ambiguity of apocalypse We stand between two notions of the apocalypse: the final manifestation of a truth upon whose eclipse history was premised and towards which it was thereby destined, and the complete eradication of all being, appearing, and thinking. Today, it is as if the old sun is beginning to burn itself out, and it is as if the word 'apocalypse' is shifting from its biblical sense of revelation in the perspective of the final judgement, to the nihilistic sense dramatised by Nietzsche in the parable of the Madman: the end of all illumination, as life and thought together with the archived traces they have built up face the unprecedented possibility of eradication without remainder. Our age is perhaps already tilting towards nihilism, rendering it timely to ask: will there be some record of the obliteration of all records, some apparition of the disappearance of all appearance, some ideal sublation or the written trace which constitutes the material form of memory? Will there by some memorial to mankind, or will it be altogether forgotten?
