Risk perception is gaining attention in disaster risk reduction and climate change-related studies. It plays a role in shaping the preparedness, adaptation, response, and resilience of vulnerable communities. However, the literature suggests that risk perception is contextually sensitive. There are limited studies that offer insights on the risk perception of climate change and related disaster events in an integrated manner. This study investigates the climate change and associated glacial lake outburst floods risk perceptions of the remotely located vulnerable communities in the northern mountainous region of Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan. The study employed the quantitative method of household surveys in vulnerable communities for data collection. An extensive literature review was conducted to select the key indicators to determine the risk perception in the selected communities. Indexing and multiple regression analyses were performed to draw the results of the study. GLOF risk perception has been found higher as compared to the climate change risk perception. Fear has been found as the most significant determinant of the GLOF risk perception, whereas socioeconomic variables of gender, education, duration of living, and past hazard experiences have been found to be predictors of climate change risk perception. Also, most people did not believe in a link between climate change and GLOF events. The study also provides an important finding for an effective policy formulation that communities are aware of the life-threatening impacts of GLOFs, which may be used to increase community resilience against GLOFs through risk communication, preparedness campaigns, and climate change adaptation measures.

We present data and analysis of the laser-induced ablation of pure tantalum (Ta, $$Z=73$$ Z = 73 ). We have identified different physical regimes using a wide range of laser pulse durations. A comparison of the influence of strongly varying laser pulse parameters on high-Z materials is presented. The crater depth caused by three different laser systems of pulse duration $${\varDelta }\tau _1=5\,\mathrm {ns}$$ Δ τ 1 = 5 ns and wavelength $$\lambda _1=1064\,\mathrm {nm}$$ λ 1 = 1064 nm , $${\varDelta }\tau _2=35\,\mathrm {ps}$$ Δ τ 2 = 35 ps , $$\lambda _2=355\,\mathrm {nm}$$ λ 2 = 355 nm and $${\varDelta }\tau _3=8.5\,\mathrm {fs}$$ Δ τ 3 = 8.5 fs , $$\lambda _3=790\,\mathrm {nm}$$ λ 3 = 790 nm are analyzed via confocal microscopy as a function of laser fluence and intensity. Optimum energy harvesting model for bidirectional cognitive radio networks2021 •
Wireless devices’ energy efficiency and spectrum shortage problem has become a key concern worldwide as the number of wireless devices increases at an unparalleled speed. Wireless energy harvesting technique from traditional radio frequency signals is suitable for extending mobile devices’ battery life. This paper investigates a cognitive radio network model where primary users have their specific licensed band, and secondary users equipped with necessary hardware required for energy harvesting can use the licensed band of the primary user by smart sensing capability. Analytical expressions for considered network metrics, namely data rate, outage probability, and energy efficiency, are derived for uplink and downlink scenarios.
