Cervical spine hangman fracture secondary to a gelastic seizure2019 •
A 42-year-old man reported to our service with a 1-week history of vague cervical neck pain on a background history of a gelastic seizure disorder. Radiological imaging confirmed a type II hangman’s fracture through the C2 pedicle. A CT angiogram of carotid and vertebral arteries was normal, and the patient was managed with an occipitocervical fusion. The patient had no neurological insult and was discharged on day 5 with a Miami-J collar for 6 weeks. Although there are case report evidence of lumbar and thoracic vertebral fractures secondary to seizures, this is the first report of a spine injury resulting from a gelastic seizure.

Baccharis magnifica, a new species endemic to the summits of the Serra do Caparaó along the border between Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil, is described. The new species is easily recognized by its shrubby habit, showy green and slightly wine-tinged, long-petiolate leaves with ciliate margins and corymbiform capitulescences. It is morphologically most similar to the allopatric B. macrophylla, which inhabits the mountain summits of the southerly Serra da Mantiqueira range. Illustrations, a distribution map, habitat information, and a conservation assessment are also provided for the new species.

Background: Community-based interventions are crucial in addressing maternal health disparities, particularly in low-resource settings. This study employed a cluster-randomized controlled trial design to evaluate the efficacy of maternal and couple counselling interventions on maternal dietary practices and weight gain monitoring during pregnancy. Objective: The study aimed to assess the impact of maternal and couple counselling interventions on maternal dietary practices and weight gain monitoring among pregnant women attending the Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) clinic in Goma town, DR Congo, and their partners. Methods: Three study groups, comprising 84 participants each, were formed: a control group receiving standard counselling, a maternal counselling group, and a couple counselling group. Sample size determination and randomization were conducted according to established guidelines. Microsoft Office Excel 2007 was utilized for random allocation. The interventions involved varying degrees of counselling sessions tailored to the specific needs of each group. Data was collected through Focus Group Discussions, In-depth Interviews, and analysed using Chi-square, ANOVA, and T-test. Results: Preliminary findings suggest that both maternal and couple counselling interventions positively influenced maternal dietary practices and weight gain monitoring. Participants in the intervention groups demonstrated improved knowledge and adherence to recommended dietary practices compared to the control group. Statistical analyses revealed significant differences among the study groups, indicating the effectiveness of the interventions. Conclusion: Maternal and couple counselling interventions hold promise in enhancing maternal nutrition and weight gain monitoring during pregnancy. These findings underscore the importance of targeted community-based interventions in promoting maternal and child health in resource-constrained settings.

Background: There seems to be a large magnitude of parasitic worm loads caused by nocturnally periodic Wuchereria bancrofti and geohelminths, in cross-border Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand. We are therefore considering an effective Mass Drug Administration (MDA) with Diethylcarbamazine (DEC) and Albendazole (ABZ). Due to short periods of their residency and current situation of W. bancrofti antigenemics and concomitant geohelminths, treatment effects on the containment of the infections need to be analyzed. Objectives: Analyze short-term effects on reduction of W. bancrofti antigen (WbAg) and geohelminths’ egg (GhE) loads. The efficacy of a single-dose combined treatment with 300 mg DEC (for filariasis) and 400 mg ABZ (for helminthiasis) was evaluated and compared with a single-dose treatment arm with 300 mg DEC alone. Material and Method: A randomized clinical trial of two treatment choices in 28 Myanmar male workers (DEC/ABZ or group I = 15, DEC or group II = 13) was conducte...

Processing date kernels for iron (III) and chromium (VI) adsorption from waterInexpensive and new adsorbents, which are produced by processing the abundant agricultural by-products, can provide an efficient solution for a cleaner environment. The occurrence of heavy metals in water may pose a significant threat to human health. In this work, the processed date kernels are used to remove chromium (VI) and iron (III) from water. The XRD, FTIR, SEM, VSM and EDX techniques are used to characterize the adsorbents. The equilibrium adsorbent dose for iron is 2 g/L while for chromium (VI) it is 4 g/L and the equilibrium time is 20 min. Moreover, acidic conditions favored the adsorption for both targets. The adsorption experiments showed that the kinetics of adsorption of chromium (VI) and iron (III) on date kernel powder fitted the pseudo-second-order model. The optimum adsorption capacities for iron (III) and chromium (VI) are 10.5 mg/g and 0.66 mg/g, respectively. In the meantime, the remarkable efficiency of the date kernel-based adsorbent for iron (III) removal paves the way for designing new magnetic adsorbents.
