Unusually Warm Summer Temperatures Exacerbate Population and Plant Level Response of Posidonia oceanica to Anthropogenic Nutrient Stress2021 •
Posidonia oceanica is a key foundation species in the Mediterranean providing valuable ecosystem services. However, this species is particularly vulnerable towards high coastal nutrient inputs and the rising frequency of intense summer heat waves, but their combined effect in situ has received little attention so far. Here, we investigated the effects of in situ nutrient addition during an unusually warm summer over a 4-month period, comparing different morphological, physiological and biochemical population metrics of seagrass meadows growing in protected areas (Ischia) with meadows already exposed to significant anthropogenic pressure (Baia – Gulf of Pozzuoli). Our study highlights that the effects of warmer than usual summer temperatures on the population level of seagrass meadows can be exacerbated if the plants are already exposed to higher anthropogenic pressures. Morphological and population level indicators mainly changed over time, possibly impacted by season and the warmer...

Inferior olive inactivation decreases the excitability of the intracerebellar and lateral vestibular nuclei in the rat1983 •
In rats under sodium pentobarbitone anaesthesia the inferior olive region has been reversibly inactivated by applying a cooling probe to the ventral surface of the medulla. Unitary activity has been recorded from the fastigial, interpositus and Deiters nuclei. Identification of units was based on the presence of a dye spot, left by the recording micropipette. In the Deiters nucleus, an additional criterion of identification was the antidromic activation from spinal cord stimulation. Following cooling of the inferior olive of one side, we have observed suppression of the activity of all the fourteen Deiters neurones and of seventeen out of twenty neurones recorded from the intracerebellar nuclei. In two out of seven Deiters neurones tested the antidromic invasion elicited by spinal cord stimulation was suppressed. In rats, whose inferior olive was previously destroyed, cooling of the inferior olive region was not followed by the powerful depression of spike activity seen in the vesti...

Effects of Occupational Hazards on Workers’ Performance in Nigeria’s Cement Industry2018 •
Purpose. This paper examined the effects of occupational hazards on workers’ performance in Nigeria’s cement industry. Methodology. Survey research method was employed in conducting the research: a structured questionnaire was designed and administered to one hundred and eighty-three (183) workers of Lafarge Cement Plant in Sagamu, Ogun State, Nigeria. Findings. The study revealed that the frequency level of occupational hazards had a significant influence on workers performance; a significant difference exist between performance levels of healthy workers to unhealthy workers; and that safe workers had high tendencies of performing on the job than workers who were unsafe at work in the cement industry. Research implications – The study established the relevance of workers wellness and safety to workers commitment to duties as predictors of workers’ performance. Originality/Value – The paper advocates the promotion of global standard occupational health and safety practices in Nigeri...
