Comparing the Effects of Chlorogenic Acid and Ilex paraguariensis Extracts on Different Markers of Brain Alterations in Rats Subjected to Chronic Restraint Stress2018 •
Positive influence of yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) on human health issues has been attributed to its frequent consumption in South American countries and is assumed to be due to its high content of antioxidant compounds, including chlorogenic acid (CGA); however, hard evidence about its positive effects under chronic stress conditions is still required. In this study, the effects of yerba mate extracts (IpE), and its main compound chlorogenic acid (CGA), on behavioral and morphological endpoints of brain damage induced by chronic restraint stress (CRS) to rats were evaluated and compared. CRS sessions were performed during 21 days. IpE (200 mg/mL, p.o.) or CGA (2 mg/mL, p.o.) were administered daily 30 min before stress. Behavioral tests comprised motor skills and anxiety-like activity. Histological (H&E) and histochemical changes were explored in three brain regions: cortex (Cx), hippocampus (Hp), and striatum (S). Rats subjected to CRS exhibited hypoactive patterns of locomoto...
BackgroundThe 2018 World Cancer Research Fund/American Institute for Cancer Research (WCRF/AICR) 3rd expert report highlights up-to-date Cancer Prevention Recommendations that may reduce burdens of many chronic diseases, including diabetes. This study examined if following a lifestyle that aligns with the recommendations – assessed via the 2018 WCRF/AICR Score – was associated with lower risk of type 2 diabetes in high-risk adults participating in the Diabetes Prevention Program Outcomes Study (DPPOS).MethodsThe Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) randomized adults at high risk for diabetes to receive a lifestyle intervention (ILS), metformin (MET) or a placebo (PLB) (mean: 3.2 years), with additional follow-up in DPPOS for 11 years (mean: 15 years total). 2018 WCRF/AICR Scores included seven components: body weight, physical activity, plant-based foods, fast foods, red and processed meat, sugar-sweetened beverages, and alcohol; the optional breastfeeding component was excluded. Score...

High-temperature performance of MoS2 thin-film transistors: Direct current and pulse current-voltage characteristics2015 •
We report on fabrication of MoS2 thin-film transistors (TFTs) and experimental investigations of their high-temperature current-voltage characteristics. The measurements show that MoS2 devices remain functional to temperatures of at least as high as 500 K. The temperature increase results in decreased threshold voltage and mobility. The comparison of the direct current (DC) and pulse measurements shows that the direct current sub-linear and super-linear output characteristics of MoS2 thin-films devices result from the Joule heating and the interplay of the threshold voltage and mobility temperature dependences. At temperatures above 450 K, a kink in the drain current occurs at zero gate voltage irrespective of the threshold voltage value. This intriguing phenomenon, referred to as a “memory step,” was attributed to the slow relaxation processes in thin films similar to those in graphene and electron glasses. The fabricated MoS2 thin-film transistors demonstrated stable operation aft...

The neonatal outcomes of Dexamethasone administration before scheduled cesarean delivery at term: a randomized clinical trial2020 •
Background: Caesarean delivery (CD) rates in developing countries are rising beyond the recommended rates of World health organization. Objective of this study was to evaluate whether Dexamethasone injections reduce neonatal incubation admissions when given before scheduled caesarean delivery (CD) at term or not. Methods: A double blinded, two armed, randomized clinical trial was conducted at Tanta University hospitals in the period from October 2017 to March 2019. Four hundred pregnant women admitted for scheduled CD with gestational age ≥37 weeks were included. Patients were randomized into study group and control group. The study group was given 3 dexamethasone doses, 8 mg each while control group was given saline injections simultaneously as a placebo drug. The primary outcome was the neonatal incubatory admissions. Results: Demographic data in both groups were comparable. Transient tachypnea of newborn (TTN) was 15.47% in study group versus 20.33% in control group with p=0.227. T...

At present, the business environment is entering its third decade in the 21st century. Business today is more modern and dynamic and is colored by various disruption. Disruption, in this case, is the disruption of technology, politics, economy, and social culture. In the management of organizational change, Lewin's model is known as a classical theory and as a guide for organizations to implement, manage, and evaluate change. This study aims to identify whether Lewin's model which is considered a classic is still adaptive for use in a business environment that is recruited. By using conceptual research methods it is known that the three stages of Lewin put forward the individual or human as the root of change through the identification of the driving factors and drivers of change. In this model, the leadership style is more oriented to involvement, commitment, and support, and orientation to sharing knowledge for the success of the change process in the organization. With th...

Isolation and characterization of an Escherichia coli strain exhibiting partial tolerance to quinolones1989 •
Quinolone antimicrobial agents rapidly kill bacteria by largely unknown mechanisms. To study this phenomenon, a strain of Escherichia coli inhibited but inefficiently killed by (i.e., partially tolerant to) norfloxacin was isolated and characterized. E. coli KL16 (norfloxacin MIC, 0.10 microgram/ml; MBC, 0.20 microgram/ml) was mutagenized with nitrosoguanidine and cyclically exposed to 3 micrograms of norfloxacin per ml. After five cycles, a bacterial strain (DS1) which was killed 1,000-fold less than KL16 during 3 h of drug exposure was isolated. The MIC and MBC of norfloxacin for DS1 were 0.20 and 1.5 micrograms/ml, respectively. Over a range of norfloxacin concentrations, DS1 was killed 2 to 4 orders of magnitude less than KL16. DS1 grew more slowly than KL16 but after normalization for growth rate was killed four times less rapidly than KL16 at drug concentrations 10-fold higher than respective MICs. DS1 and KL16 cells filamented similarly upon exposure to norfloxacin. DS1 exhib...
