Cell surface regulation of silica-induced apoptosis by the SR-A scavenger receptor in a murine lung macrophage cell line (MH-S)2001 •
Scavenger receptors (SR) are responsible for recognition of ligands as diverse as oxidized LDL (endogenous) to respirable particulates (exogenous). A number of recent studies have suggested that these SR ligands induce apoptosis of macrophages. However, the mechanism by which SR triggers apoptosis is not understood. This study used a murine alveolar macrophage cell line (MH-S) to investigate the role of the SR in caspase activation. The presence of SR on MH-S cells was confirmed by FACS analysis and was similar to the distribution found on murine alveolar macrophages. The activity of caspases 1, 3, and 6 was measured following a 6-h exposure to crystalline silica with and without blockers of the SR. Caspase activities were determined by hydrolysis of specific chromogenic substrates and formation of an active enzymatic form (Western for active caspase 3). Silica stimulated significant caspase activity, apoptosis, and necrosis of MH-S cells, which was attenuated by 2F8 (a blocking ant...
Evolutionary Systematics
Four new species of Stenocercus Duméril & Bibron, 1837 (Squamata, Iguania) from the Department of Amazonas in northeastern PeruThe tropical Andes are known to be the richest and most diverse place on earth. This mountainous region covers almost one third of the Peruvian territory, and its herpetofauna remains poorly known. The lizard genus Stenocercus Duméril & Bibron, 1837 contains 69 species and most of them occur in the tropical Andes, although some exist as high as 4000 m a.s.l. The examination of newly collected material from the Andes of northern Peru in the Department of Amazonas reveals four new species of Stenocercus which we describe below. Of these four new species, three inhabit the ecoregion of Peruvian Yungas at elevations of 1460 to 2370 m a.s.l., and one the Marañón dry forest ecoregion at elevations of 1340 to 1470 m a.s.l. Additionally, we provide new data about coloration, natural history and distribution of the poorly known S. aculeatus O’Shaughnessy, 1879; and discuss the identity of some populations of S. prionotus Cadle, 2001 and S. scapularis Boulenger, 1901.

‘True, Publick and Notorious’: The Privateering War of 18122021 •
During the War of 1812, hundreds of private armed vessels, or privateers, carrying letters of marque and reprisal from their respective governments, served as counterweights to the navies of Great Britain and the United States. By 1812, privateering was acknowledged as an ideal way to annoy the enemy at little or no cost to the government. Local citizens provided the ships, crews and prizes while the court and customs systems took in the appropriate fees. The entire process was legal, licensed and often extremely lucrative. Unlike the navy, privateers were essentially volunteer commerce raiders, determined to weaken the enemy economically rather than militarily. So successful were they, that from July 1812 to February 1815, privateers from the United States, Britain, and the British provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia (as well as those sailing under French and Spanish flags) turned the shipping lanes from Newfoundland to the West Indies, Norway to West Africa, and even the So...
Crossing the threshold of Hope. JPII and Tariq Ramadan' approaches to the religious other
Crossing the Threshold of Hope: John Paul II and Tariq Ramadan's Approaches to the Traditional Hermeneutics of Relation with the "Religious Other"with an eye towards the development of the exegetical tradition of Catholic hermeneutics on relation with the Jews, the article briey surveys the development of the hermeneutical tradition of the relation and attitude of the Catholic Church towards the Jews and Judaism over the centuries, especially through the prism of the acts of St John Paul II and his relationship with the Jewish people. The paper proposes that Islam can prot from the same approach, and Tariq Ramadan, a scion of Hasan al-Banna (founder of the Muslim Brotherhood) offers a hypothesis of what he calls "necessary diversity" on how Islam can coexist peacefully with other religious traditions, especially the ahl al-Kitāb (people of the Book)-Jews and Christians.
