Recent advances in smart device technologies have enabled a new computing paradigm in which large amounts of data are stored and processed on mobile devices. Despite the available powerful hardware, the actual capabilities of mobile devices are rather limited as they are often battery powered. This paper explores data caching for k-out-of-n computing in mobile cloud environments, with the goal of distributing data in a way that the expected future energy consumption for nodes to retrieve data is minimized, while preserving reliability. More specifically, we propose to place data caches (in addition to the originally stored data) based on the actual data access patterns and the network topology. Consequently, we formulate the cache place-ment optimization problem and propose a centralized caching framework that optimally solves the problem and a distributed solution that approximates the optimal solution. The distributed caching framework (DC) learns data access patterns by sniffing ...

Fingerprinting of Volatile Organic Compounds as an Advance Technology to Assess the Seed Quality of Groundnut Through Correlation and Principal Component Analysis Method2024 •
Background: Groundnut seeds are highly sensitive to deterioration mainly due to their chemical composition and moisture content. The high oil content and fatty acids of groundnut seeds reduces the seed viability well in advance due to lipid peroxidation process, which is the most frequent cause of seed ageing. As a result, not only lipid peroxidation, but also a series of reactions that produce toxic products occur. Stored seeds produce increased level of volatile organic compounds that leads to seed deterioration. Methods: The experiment was conducted to profile volatile organic compounds emitted from groundnut seeds during storage and also to analysis the volatile organic compounds through correlation and principal component analysis method. Volatile organic compounds profiling of stored groundnut seeds was done through Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The air sample was taken at monthly intervals from the glass bottle using solid-phase micro extraction (SPME) method. Result: The results of the study clearly demonstrated that, totally 52 volatile compounds comprising of 10 alcohols, 5 aldehydes, 15 acids, 9 esters, 7 alkanes, 3 alkenes, 2 ketones and 1 ether were trapped in stored groundnut seeds. Finally the study concluded that ethanol, 1-butanol, 1-hexanol, acetaldehyde, hexanal, Nonenal, 9,12,15-octadecatrionic acid, acetic acid and 3-methyl acetate were found to be highly negatively correlated with seed germination.
We have reexamined the phase readings of the Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale (OGS) seismometric database, in the years 1977-2013, to isolate explosions and undefined events marked with peculiar codes and clearly tracked in the original full printouts of paper bulletins. Nowadays this tag is not easily available in online metadata, thus leading to erroneous interpretations of the seismicity patterns. We also performed a specific analysis on quarry blasts reported to the Geological Survey of the Trento Autonomous Province, and detected by the network in 2013. More than 4,400 events constitute a new prototypal database of artificial/ dubious earthquakes, potentially ascribed to anthropogenic or "induced" events; about 40% of them may be located with the standard procedures of OGS bulletins, even if some solutions are of bad quality. More than 1,000 events, which mainly occurred during the first decades of the monitoring of the northeastern Alps and reported in actual bulletins, have to be removed from data analysis of natural seismicity, and are easily traceable with the tool given as Supplementary Material.

Cyanobacteria: Photoautotrophic Microbial Factories for the Sustainable Synthesis of Industrial Products2015 •
Cyanobacteria are widely distributed Gram-negative bacteria with a long evolutionary history and the only prokaryotes that perform plant-like oxygenic photosynthesis. Cyanobacteria possess several advantages as hosts for biotechnological applications, including simple growth requirements, ease of genetic manipulation, and attractive platforms for carbon neutral production process. The use of photosynthetic cyanobacteria to directly convert carbon dioxide to biofuels is an emerging area of interest. Equipped with the ability to degrade environmental pollutants and remove heavy metals, cyanobacteria are promising tools for bioremediation and wastewater treatment. Cyanobacteria are characterized by the ability to produce a spectrum of bioactive compounds with antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and antialgal properties that are of pharmaceutical and agricultural significance. Several strains of cyanobacteria are also sources of high-value chemicals, for example, pigments, vitamins, a...
