Adminstration of PEG-Interferon to a Patient with Ulcerative Colitis and Chronic Hepatitis C Correlated with Reduced Colonic Inflammation and Reversal of Peripheral Th1/Th2 Ratios2007 •
A 42-year-old man with chronic hepatitis C and ulcerative colitis (UC) was referred to our hospital in August 2004 because of bloody diarrhea. He was clinically and endoscopically diagnosed with flare of UC. After informed consent had been obtained, he was treated with PEG-IFN-α-2a. Four weeks after initiation of PEG-IFN therapy, his abdominal symptoms gradually subsided. Intracellular cytokine assay revealed that the ratio of T-helper (Th) 1 (IFN-γ)/Th 2 (IL-4) increased after IFN therapy. Three months after starting IFN therapy, colonoscopy revealed a normal mucosal pattern. He was uneventfully treated with PEG-IFN-α-2a for one year. When last seen in November 2006, he was still in remission of UC. Our intracellular cytokine data suggested that alteration of Th1/Th2 cytokine balance by IFN is one possible mechanisms of reducing intestinal inflammation in patients with UC. In this regard, IFN therapy could be useful for some patients with UC refractory to other conventional therapies.
Lakes are sensitive to environmental changes and anthropogenic effects, and Lake Balaton, the largest shallow lake in Central Europe, is no exception. To protect it against elevated nutrient loads, the Kis-Balaton Water Protection System (KBWPS) was constructed as a mitigation wetland at the mouth of the largest tributary of the lake. This work aims to demonstrate the applicability of various multivariate statistical methods in water quality management with an emphasis put on determining the new stable state, ecological equilibrium between the former hypertrophic basin (Keszthely Bay) of Lake Balaton and the establishment of the KBWPS. Cluster and principal component analyses were conducted on 19 weekly measured (1981-2009) time series coming from 14 sampling sites. The results have explicitly proven that the new stable state of the system has been achieved: (i) trophic processes moved upstream from Lake Balaton and (ii) both the internal and external loads decreased.

Review of Different Methods of Abnormal Mass Detection in Digital MammogramsVarious images from massive image databases extract inherent, implanted information or different examples explicitly found in the images. These images may help the community in initial self-screening breast cancer, and primary health care can introduce this method to the community. This study aimed to review the different methods of abnormal mass detection in digital mammograms. One of best methods for the detection of breast malignancy and discovery at a nascent stage is digital mammography. Some of the mammograms with excellent images have a high intensity of resolution that enables preparing images with high computations. The fact that medical images are so common on computers is one of the main things that helps radiologists make diagnoses. Image preprocessing highlights the portion after extraction and arrangement in computerized mammograms. Moreover, the future scope of examination for paving could be the way for a top invention in computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) for mammograms...

Visualization of gender differences under different emotional states is performed in this article. Accomplished by Electroencephalographic (EEG) based functional connectivity patterns. Eighteen young participants view advertisement film clips in series that evoked the following emotional states: neutral, positive, or negative. A wireless EMOTIV EPOC EEG headset with 14 channels has used to collect EEG signals from subjects who shown a series of advertisement clips. Coherence is used as a connectivity index to estimate the functional brain connectivity on EEG signals. Brain connectivity is analyzed on alpha, beta, and theta frequency bands for all the three emotions. Results indicate that while viewing the negative advertisements right hemispheric activation is greater in men while women have left hemispheric activation. The right hemisphere is activated in men more than in women. So the left hemisphere finds more active during the advertisement perceive by women, as positive and mor...

The X-linked aristaless gene, ARX, is essential for the development of the gonads, forebrain, olfactory bulb, pancreas, and skeletal muscle in mice and humans. Mutations cause neurological diseases, often accompanied by ambiguous genitalia. There are a disproportionately high number of testis and brain genes on the human and mouse X chromosomes. It is still unknown whether the X chromosome accrued these genes during its evolution or whether genes that find themselves on the X chromosome evolve such roles. ARX was originally autosomal in mammals and remains so in marsupials, whereas in eutherian mammals it translocated to the X chromosome. In this study, we examined autosomal ARX in tammars and compared it with the X-linked Arx in mice. We detected ARX mRNA in the neural cells of the forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain, and olfactory bulbs in developing tammars, consistent with the expression in mice. ARX was detected by RT-PCR and mRNA in situ hybridization in the developing tammar wa...
