Among perovskite manganites, La 1 x Ca x MnO 3 is considered as one of the promising candidates for application of magnetic tech- niques because of showing CMR and a large magnetic entropy change (the magnetocaloric effect, MCE [4]) near room temperature. Earlier studies [5 e 8] revealed that the ferromagnetic interaction in La 1 x. Ca x MnO 3 became dominant as x ¼ 0.3, corresponding to the ratio Mn 3 þ /Mn 4 þ ¼ 7/3.
